It has been much too long since our last update but that isn’t due to lack of awesome projects to post. And I’ve been dying to post these incredible before and afters so I won’t wait…

Bountiful Project – Before and After

It’s always exciting to look back at the before pictures when finishing up a project. This Bountiful home had a great lot and a beautiful view but needly a complete overhaul. We called it a 7-layer burrito. Layers DIY projects gone wrong.

Luckily, for the 8th layer, the homeowners chose to put a little more thought into the design. And together we peeled back all the layers and gave it the style and real Craftsmen character this house (and family) deserved. It will be exciting to see it in the summertime when the landscape greens up again.

We will post shots and details of each of the rooms but first some before and after shots.

We are so excited about our project in Bountiful. Craftsmen style has always been one of my favorites so I’ve really enjoyed diving back into it and researching all the details that make Craftsmen style so great!

Spring Lane Swing Day Bed

I’ve had my eye on doing a swing like this since I saw this photo:
What could be better than a swing a family could all sit on or one person can lay back and read on a lazy day. There are not many places where you can buy a swing like this and they usually sell for quite a bit. Even though we already had too much on our plate to complete before the open house we still made the swing a priority. We’re pretty excited with how it turned out:
Caitlin had some custom pieces made for the swing making it super comfortable to hang out on. However, we took off the pillows to show the details.
If you are at all interested in ordering a swing like this one, please post a comment or send us an email. We are considering producing more of these if there’s a demand. They would come in any of the following possible finishes: white, expresso, or pickled beach wood (show above). Prices would start at $1600.

Open House Encore! Tuesday, August 16th 6-9pm

Friends don’t let friends use vinyl fence

Ok, I get it. Vinyl fencing is super low maintenance. And I realize there’s a time and a place for it. I’ve even installed vinyl fence myself. It’s kind of playing with legos, pretty fun. That being said, I’ve seen a lot of cracked, blown over, yellowing vinyl fences just proving not everything is indestructible. Because Utah is the largest consumer of vinyl fence product I knew doing an authentic wood fence would present challenges.

It started with the Arbor…

I found this picture. It looked like something out of a dream. How cool would this be for the gate entrance to a house….so that’s exactly what we are going to do. I’m pretty excited. My goal is to blow guest’s minds before they walk onto the property.

I couldn’t have asked for a better set up. They already have a 8′ tall looming hedge. We just need to squeeze an arbor in there.

And then the fence.

One moment of inspiration came as I stepped out of the movie theater after watching HP7.2. I was sad for two reasons. First, there’s something depressing about walking out of the theater in the daylight. You feel like you should’ve been doing something more productive and second, well, it was the last HP movie. It’s over folks.

Anyway, this fence caught my eye as we walked out. Just a random fence in a random location. I really liked it and I’d been trying to decide how best to design a fence for the Holladay job. This fence seemed almost Nantucket to me.

Here’s our mock-up. We went with spikes rather than pickets. I felt it gave it a more formal look as opposed to the country or suburban feel from the pickets. I especially like my tinfoil finial. Do you know how hard it is to get a ball finial like this? It took tons of online searching to find one let alone one for a decent price. Vocabulary lesson: these ball finial are sometimes referred to as “nantucket ball finial” or “quaise ball finial” There, now you will be lightyears ahead of me when I started searching for these. Thank you, Google.

Clearly, we still have a lot of work left before August 6th. But we are excited with how everything is coming together. Be sure to come check it out! RSVP HERE. Bringing the indoors out…

Having great details and livable spaces doesn’t stop on the inside but it does start back on the drawing board creating the master plan. It’s important to think about how you want the space to feel along with how you want it to actually look.

Here was the existing backyard on our Holladay project:

And here is one possibility that includes three separate living areas: sitting, eating and roasting. However, they can easily combine to accommodate for larger gatherings.

It is so important to make the accessibility easy so its natural for people to use the outdoors. When done correctly its like adding additional square footage to your home. Poorly placed doors or steps makes the backyard uninviting and rarely used.
